BMW-Fahrer 🚘🙄

BMW drivers

Hallo Leute!

Today’s dialogue is about a stereotype: the BMW driver. In Germany, they’re often seen as someone who drives a bit too close, a bit too confidently, and doesn’t use the indicator all that much.

Do you have similar stereotypes where you’re from? Maybe about certain car brands or types of drivers?

Part 1 - Read 👀

Read the Dialogue (out loud if you can)

Alex: Fährst du eigentlich immer so dicht auf, oder war das heute eine Ausnahme?

Mark: Ich fahr normal. Die anderen fahren zu langsam. Das ist der Unterschied.

Alex: Klassische Antwort. Mein Kollege sagt genau dasselbe. Der fährt auch BMW, klar. Und das mit dem Blinken? Weil das hör ich wirklich ständig.

Mark: Totaler Unsinn.

Mark: Tja. Aber wenigstens haben wir die besseren Autos.

Part 3 - Understand 💡

Read the explanations & translation (take your time, ask questions in the comments if something is unclear)

A) Explanations 💬

wenn ich schon drauf bin, ist die Sache ja klar – A spoken pattern used to justify skipping a step by pointing out that the outcome already speaks for itself, common in casual self-defense or explanation. (English: “once I’m already on it, that speaks for itself”, literal: “if I’m already on it, the matter is clear”)

Ich geb’s ja zu – A natural, slightly softened way to admit something in spoken conversation, often used before a mild confession or concession. (English: “I’ll admit it” or “I’ll be honest”)

das hat sich gelegt – Used to say that a habit, feeling, or behavior has faded or calmed down over time, very common in everyday spoken German. (English: “that settled down” or “that passed”, literal: “that laid itself down”)

souverän – Used colloquially to describe someone who handles things with cool confidence and ease, often with a hint of self-flattery in informal speech. (English: “in control” or “composed and confident”)

Der Motor will das so – A humorous spoken construction that attributes agency to an object to deflect personal responsibility, a pattern used widely in casual conversation to justify behavior with mock logic. (English: “that’s just what the engine wants”, literal: “the engine wants it that way”)

B) Translation 🔄

Alex: Do you always tailgate like that, or was today a one-off?

Mark: I drive normally. Everyone else drives too slowly. That's the difference.

Alex: Classic answer. My colleague says exactly the same thing. He drives a BMW too, obviously. And the whole indicator thing? Because I hear that one all the time.

Mark: Complete nonsense. I actually always indicate. Well, okay, not necessarily on the motorway when overtaking, because once I'm already out there, that pretty much says it all.

Alex: I'll admit it, I used to be a bit aggressive behind the wheel too. Left lane, flashing headlights, a bit of tailgating when things weren't moving fast enough. But that's calmed down. A little bit, at least.

Mark: I don't tailgate. I just communicate very directly. That's a distinction non-BMW drivers simply don't get. And the parking across two spaces thing, that's not selfishness, that's paint protection.

Alex: My wife says since I got the 5 Series, I've become a different person. I'd call it more of a quiet confidence.

Mark: A BMW in the slow lane is like a suit worn over pyjamas. It just doesn't work. The engine demands it.

Alex: Life's not fair, Mark.

Mark: Nope. But at least we have the better cars.

Part 4 - Write ✍️

Writing Practice (don’t skip, writing trains your brain to actively form sentences, and this carries over into speaking)

Answer ONE of these:

  • Kennst du typische Klischees über Autofahrer? Beschreibe ein Beispiel.

  • Warum entstehen solche Klischees deiner Meinung nach?

  • Sind solche Vorurteile eher harmlos oder problematisch? Warum?

Send me your text by replying to this email, and I will answer + give feedback to the first 20 replies!

(check your spam folder just in case)

💬 Alternatively:
Post your answer in the comments.

(you are more likely to get feedback)

Part 5 - Speak 🗣️

Spoken Conversation Practice (This is the part that gets you speaking more naturally, faster.)

Have a short 3–5 minute conversation with your favorite AI (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, etc.).

  • Follow today’s topic

  • Or choose your own

  • Ask the AI for corrections and feedback afterwards

AI isn’t a substitute for real conversations with people, but it’s a great way to practise when no conversation partner is available.

Wer ist der beste Fahrer / die beste Fahrerin, die du kennst?

Send them this dialogue. Maybe it helps 😉
