Was ist dein heimlicher Tick? 🤫

What’s your secret quirk?

Moinsen!

Everyone has at least one weird little habit they don’t usually talk about. Or, as people like to say: „Jeder hat so seine Macken.“ This dialogue is about exactly that moment when something slips out and you realize you’re not as alone with it as you thought.

Part 1 - Read 👀

Read the Dialogue (out loud if you can)

Lena: Okay, Mike, jetzt mal Butter bei die Fische ⍟. Was ist dein heimlicher Tick?
Mike: Ich weiß nicht, wovon du redest. Ich bin mental völlig stabil.
Lena: Aha. Genau das sagen Leute, die nachts mit dem Lichtschalter diskutieren.

Mike: Lustig. Sehr lustig. Können wir bitte das Thema wechseln ⍟?
Lena: Nein. Absolut nicht. Ich seh dir das doch an ⍟. Du hast diesen Blick. Also?

Mike: Gut. Aber du hast nichts gehört, ja?
Lena: Mein Mund ist verschlossen ⍟. Meistens.

Mike: Okay… ich kann keine Sprachnachrichten anhören, ohne dabei mitzunicken.
Lena: Bitte was?

Sehr unangenehm.

Lena: Ich liebe alles daran.

Part 3 - Understand 💡

Read the explanations & translation (take your time, ask questions in the comments if something is unclear)

A) Explanations 💬

jetzt mal Butter bei die Fische means “let’s get to the point” (literally butter by the fish) and is used to demand honesty or clarity, and it is spoken and informal.

können wir bitte das Thema wechseln means “can we please change the subject” and is used to escape an uncomfortable topic, and it is spoken and neutral.

ich seh dir das doch an means “I can tell by looking at you” and is used to claim insight into someone’s thoughts or feelings, and it is spoken and informal.

mein Mund ist verschlossen means “my lips are sealed” and is used to promise discretion, often with irony, and it is spoken and informal.

entspann dich means “relax” and is used to calm someone down in a familiar context, and it is spoken and informal.neutral.

B) Translation 🔄

Lena: Okay, Mike, let’s get to the point. What’s your secret habit?
Mike: I have no idea what you’re talking about. I’m completely mentally stable.
Lena: Sure. That’s exactly what people say who argue with the light switch at night.

Mike: Hilarious. Really hilarious. Can we please change the subject?
Lena: No. Absolutely not. I can tell just by looking at you. You’ve got that look. So?

Mike: Fine. But you didn’t hear this, okay?
Lena: My lips are sealed. Mostly.

Mike: Okay… I can’t listen to voice messages without nodding along.
Lena: What?
Mike: I don’t know why! Even when I’m alone. Someone talks, I nod. Like one of those dashboard dogs.

Lena: That’s amazing. Even on WhatsApp?
Mike: Especially there. The other day I was nodding on the bus, and the woman across from me nodded back. Ten seconds straight. Very awkward.

Lena: I love everything about this.
Mike: I don’t. And now comes the worst part. Sometimes I quietly answer with “mhm”, even though nobody can hear me.

Lena: No!
Mike: Yes. And that’s exactly why I never wanted to talk about it.

Lena: Relax. That’s not a quirk, that’s personality.
Mike: Great. So now I’m officially the guy who agrees with voice messages.

Part 4 - Write ✍️

Writing Practice (don’t skip, writing trains your brain to actively form sentences, and this carries over into speaking)

Answer ONE of these:

  • Was ist dein heimlicher Tick?

  • Wann fällt dir dein Tick besonders auf?

  • Wie reagieren andere darauf?

Send me your text by replying to this email, and I will answer + give feedback to the first 20 replies!

(check your spam folder just in case)

💬 Alternatively:
Post your answer in the comments.

(you are more likely to get feedback)

Part 5 - Speak 🗣️

Spoken Conversation Practice (This is the part that gets you speaking more naturally, faster.)

Have a short 3–5 minute conversation with your favorite AI (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, etc.).

  • Follow today’s topic

  • Or choose your own

  • Ask the AI for corrections and feedback afterwards

AI isn’t a substitute for real conversations with people, but it’s a great way to practise when no conversation partner is available.

If you’re new here: welcome!

I’m really glad you’re here.

If you ever feel like it, tell me a bit about yourself.
Why German matters to you.
Where it feels easy.
Where it feels stuck.

You can reply, leave a comment, or just read quietly - all of that is fine. I see every message, and I’m always curious who’s on the other side of the screen.

And if this edition stayed with you for a moment, feel free to like it ♡ or pass it on to someone who might enjoy it too.
