Valentinstag feiern oder nicht? 💌

To celebrate Valentine's Day or not?

Hallo liebe Leute! Valentinstag steht vor der Tür…

This one is a little love letter to everyone who has ever watched a man confidently overthink something he still doesn’t understand. Or, as the saying goes: „Er meint es ja nur gut.“ This dialogue plays with that quiet gap between intention and perception, and the patience it often takes on the other side.

If you like the edition, feel free to share it with someone who might enjoy it too. 💌

Part 1 - Read 👀

Read the Dialogue (out loud if you can)

Julian: Kurze Frage ⍟, Alex… dieser ganze Valentinstag-Kram. Muss man da eigentlich wirklich was machen?

Julian: Also lieber irgendwas machen, als gar nichts?
Alex: Genau. Und am besten so, dass es nicht wirkt, als hättest du lange drüber diskutiert.

Julian: Verstanden. Ich fang mal klein an.
Alex: Sehr vernünftig. Klein, aber nicht gedankenlos.

Part 3 - Understand 💡

Read the explanations & translation (take your time, ask questions in the comments if something is unclear)

A) Explanations 💬

Kurze Frage means “quick question” and is used to casually introduce a topic, and it is spoken and informal.

Kommt drauf an means “it depends” and is used to give a flexible or conditional answer, and it is spoken and neutral.

null Orientierung means “no clue at all” and is used to express complete uncertainty, and it is spoken and informal.

mega den Kopf gemacht means “overthought it a lot” and is used to describe excessive worrying or thinking, and it is spoken and informal.

Willkommen im Club means “welcome to the club” and is used to signal shared experience or shared frustration, and it is spoken and informal.

B) Translation 🔄

Julian: Quick question, Alex. All this Valentine’s Day stuff. Do you actually have to do something?
Alex: Depends on how much trouble you want to avoid.
Julian: I’ve only been with her for a few months and I have no clue. Flowers? Going out to eat? Or better stay cool and not overdo it?

Alex: After ten years in a relationship, I can tell you this. Doing nothing is not a neutral option. Even if you say beforehand that you’re doing nothing, that doesn’t mean it won’t matter.
Julian: That already sounds like a trap.

Alex: It is. I used to overthink it like crazy. These days I mostly try not to make a big mistake. She doesn’t expect grand gestures anymore, but completely ignoring it wouldn’t be a good idea either.
Julian: That’s exactly my problem. I don’t know where “sweet” ends and “cringe” begins.

Alex: Welcome to the club. Flowers are usually a solid middle ground. Not very creative, but accepted.
Julian: And if she says she doesn’t need that kind of thing?

Alex: She might honestly mean it. Still, she’ll remember whether you put some thought into it or not.
Julian: Unreal. Why is this so complicated?

Alex: Because we men think you can solve this logically. You can’t.
Julian: So better do something than nothing at all?
Alex: Exactly. And ideally in a way that doesn’t look like you debated it for hours.

Julian: Got it. I’ll start small.
Alex: Very sensible. Small, but not thoughtless.

Part 4 - Write ✍️

Writing Practice (don’t skip, writing trains your brain to actively form sentences, and this carries over into speaking)

Answer ONE of these:

  • Was hältst du vom Valentinstag?

  • Wie wird der Valentinstag in deinem Umfeld gefeiert?

  • Sollte man den Valentinstag ernst nehmen oder eher nicht?

Send me your text by replying to this email, and I will answer + give feedback to the first 20 replies!

(check your spam folder just in case)

💬 Alternatively:
Post your answer in the comments.

(you are more likely to get feedback)

Part 5 - Speak 🗣️

Spoken Conversation Practice (This is the part that gets you speaking more naturally, faster.)

Have a short 3–5 minute conversation with your favorite AI (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, etc.).

  • Follow today’s topic

  • Or choose your own

  • Ask the AI for corrections and feedback afterwards

AI isn’t a substitute for real conversations with people, but it’s a great way to practise when no conversation partner is available.

What part of German still makes you go “wait… what?”

If you feel like answering, I’d genuinely love to hear it. You can reply to this email or leave a comment.

And if this edition was useful, relatable, or simply enjoyable, feel free to like it and share it with someone who’s learning German too. Chances are, they’re struggling with the same thing.
