Sport ist Mord 💀

"Sport is murder"

Hallo zusammen!

Today’s topic is the expression: „Sport ist Mord.“ Literally: “Sport is murder.” 😄

Of course, nobody means it seriously. It’s usually said after suffering through a workout or a run.

I’m sure a lot of you will disagree with what is said in the dialogue!

Part 1 - Read 👀

Read the Dialogue (out loud if you can)

You just saw what conversational German looks like. The next parts are where passive understanding turns into real training reps: 2. listen → 3. understand → 4. write → 5. speak. That’s what makes conversational German start feeling more natural!

Part 3 - Understand 💡

Read the explanations & translation (Go through the explanations and translation. Take your time, this is where things click.)

A) Explanations 💬

ich hab’s gehasst – A blunt, unfiltered spoken admission used to describe a thoroughly unpleasant experience without softening it, particularly effective because native speakers rarely use “hassen” this directly in everyday conversation, which gives it real punch. (English: “I hated it”)

warum tue ich mir das wieder an – A very natural spoken phrase used in the moment of doing something unpleasant to question why you keep putting yourself through it, widely usable in any context involving self-inflicted discomfort or recurring bad decisions. (English: “why do I keep doing this to myself” or “why am I putting myself through this again”, literal: “why do I do this to myself again”)

das Ding mit dem Sport – A casual spoken construction used to introduce a known truth or recurring pattern about a topic, the formula “das Ding mit + noun” being widely reusable whenever you want to flag that something has a familiar and slightly complicated dynamic. (English: “that’s the thing with exercise” or “that’s how it is with sport”, literal: “the thing with sport”)

ich glaub das bei den wenigsten – A measured spoken phrase used to express scepticism about a widely held claim or performance, implying that very few people are being genuine, common when someone wants to push back on a social norm without being too direct or confrontational. (English: “I don’t think many people actually mean that”, literal: “I believe that for the fewest”)

und so – A very common spoken filler used at the end of a list to signal that more examples could follow but don’t need to be spelled out, the equivalent of “and stuff” or “and all that,” natural across all registers and ages in everyday German. (English: “and all that” or “and stuff like that”, literal: “and so”)

B) Translation 🔄

Ben: I spent an hour this morning going back and forth about whether to go for a run. And then I went. And I hated it.

Sara: But you did go. That counts.

Ben: Does it? I was miserable the whole time. Just the first kilometre – I was thinking, why do I keep doing this to myself. What for. It was cold, my legs felt like concrete, and a car almost soaked me.

Sara: And afterwards?

Ben: Afterwards it was okay. Briefly. For maybe twenty minutes I felt good. And then the muscle soreness already started.

Sara: That's just the thing with exercise. The moment itself is usually unpleasant, but something about afterwards keeps pulling you back anyway. Otherwise you wouldn't do it.

Ben: I do it because I'm scared of what happens if I don't. So more as prevention, really.

Sara: At least you're honest. Most people pretend they love sport. I don't think many of them actually mean it.

Ben: My colleague raves about his morning run. Every single day. With heart rate monitors and kilometre spreadsheets and all that. He plans his holidays around running routes.

Sara: Yeah, that type exists. But that's a different species. We normal people drag ourselves there and just look forward to it being over.

Ben: Sport is murder. That's always been true.

Part 4 - Write ✍️

Writing Practice (this step is easy to skip, but it’s where real progress happens)

Answer ONE of these:

  • Warum sagen manche Menschen „Sport ist Mord“?

  • Welche Rolle spielt Sport in deinem Leben?

Part 5 - Speak 🗣️

Spoken Conversation Practice (This is the part that gets you speaking more naturally, faster.)

Have a short 3–5 minute conversation with your favorite AI (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, etc.).

  • Follow today’s topic

  • Or choose your own

  • Ask the AI for corrections and feedback afterwards

AI isn’t a substitute for real conversations with people, but it’s a great way to practise when no conversation partner is available.

Ist Sport wirklich Mord? 😵‍💫
