Moin zusammen!
Today’s topic is something you might come across at some point: the word „Quotentürke“. It’s often used half-jokingly, but depending on the situation, it can carry a bit more weight. There’s even a song about it, check it out here:
Literally, the word combines Quote (quota) and Türke (Turk), and describes someone with Turkish heritage who is included in a group to fulfill a diversity expectation. Often as “the Turkish person” in a team or company.
I turned this into a dialogue because, being partly non-German myself, I’ve started noticing how often these kinds of dynamics come up in everyday conversations.

Alex: Cem, darf ich dich mal was fragen? Klingt vielleicht etwas komisch.

Alex: Na ja… die Firma macht jetzt diese Diversity-Kampagne. Und ich hab mich ehrlich gesagt gefragt - fühlst du dich manchmal wie ein Quotentürke hier?
Cem: Oha. Das ist direkt. Aber ja - manchmal schon, wenn ich ehrlich bin.
Alex: Wirklich? Das hätte ich jetzt nicht gedacht ⍟.
Cem: Doch, doch. Wenn ich bei Präsentationen extra vorgestellt werd', merkst du so ein… Grinsen im Raum. Als ob's heißt: „Seht ihr? Wir haben einen dabei." Das nervt halt ⍟.
Alex: Aber wär's nicht trotzdem besser als gar keine Sichtbarkeit?
Cem: Kommt drauf an, oder? Sichtbarkeit, weil ich gut in meinem Job bin - super. Aber Sichtbarkeit, weil ich einen Migrationshintergrund hab? Das fühlt sich falsch an, irgendwie.
Alex: Okay, das versteh ich. Aber ohne sowas wären viele Leute doch gar nicht erst in der Position, oder?
Cem: Stimmt schon ⍟. Das ist ja das Blöde daran - die Idee ist eigentlich gut. Aber die Umsetzung… da hapert's noch gewaltig ⍟.
Alex: Also du bist nicht komplett dagegen?
Cem: Gegen Gerechtigkeit? Nee. Aber ich will halt wegen meiner Arbeit gefragt werden - nicht wegen meines Passes.
Alex: Das klingt… eigentlich ziemlich vernünftig.
Cem: Ich weiß. Bin ich nicht immer.

⍟ Kommt drauf an - A very common phrase, used to signal that the answer depends on circumstances not yet defined, and fits naturally in casual and semi-formal conversation alike. (English: “it depends”, literal: “comes down to it”)
⍟ Das hätte ich jetzt nicht gedacht - A spontaneous spoken reaction to something that contradicts your expectations, used informally when something genuinely surprises you in the moment. (English: “I wouldn’t have expected that”, literal: “I wouldn’t have thought that just now”)
⍟ Das nervt halt - A direct, colloquial way to express frustration or annoyance, where the particle “halt” softens the complaint slightly while framing it as an obvious, accepted fact. (English: “it’s just annoying”, literal: “that annoys”)
⍟ Stimmt schon - Used to concede a point without fully agreeing, this phrase acknowledges the truth in what someone said while keeping space open for a counter-argument or nuance. (English: “fair enough” or “that’s true”, literal: “that’s right already”)
⍟ Da hapert’s noch gewaltig - An idiomatic spoken expression for when something falls seriously short in execution or quality, stronger and more vivid than simply saying something “needs improvement.” (English: “there’s still a long way to go there”, literal: “it’s really struggling there still”)
B) Translation 🔄
Alex: Cem, can I ask you something? It might sound a bit strange.
Cem: Depends. What's going on?
Alex: Well… the company is running this diversity campaign now. And I honestly found myself wondering - do you ever feel like you're just the token Turk around here?
Cem: Wow. That's pretty direct. But yeah - sometimes, if I'm being honest.
Alex: Really? I wouldn't have expected that.
Cem: Yeah, for real. When I get specially introduced at presentations, you notice this… smirk in the room. Like it's saying: "See? We've got one." It's just annoying.
Alex: But wouldn't it still be better than no visibility at all?
Cem: Depends, right? Visibility because I'm good at my job - great. But visibility because I have an immigrant background? That feels wrong somehow.
Alex: Okay, I get that. But without something like that, a lot of people wouldn't even be in that position in the first place, would they?
Cem: Fair enough. And that's the frustrating part - the idea is actually good. But the execution… that's still really where it falls short.
Alex: So you're not completely against it?
Cem: Against fairness? No. But I want to be asked because of my work - not because of my passport.
Alex: That sounds… actually pretty reasonable.
Cem: I know. I'm not always.
