Papperlapapp 🙄

“(Nonsense! / Rubbish!)”

Hallo zusammen!

Papperlapapp is an old-fashioned word meaning something like “nonsense!”, “rubbish!” or “oh, come on!” You use it when you think what someone has just said is not true or not worth taking seriously.

There isn’t really a literal translation. Papperlapapp is an onomatopoeic expression, so a string of sounds meant to imitate meaningless chatter. It has been used in German for centuries and is related to older expressions such as papp and pappern, associated with pointless or excessive talking.

So when someone tells you something you find completely ridiculous, sometimes there’s only one appropriate response: Ach, Papperlapapp!

Part 1 - Read 👀

Read the Dialogue (out loud if you can)

Rolf: Ich lade mein Handy nie über Nacht. Das zerstört den Akku komplett.

Heike: Ach, Papperlapapp!

Heike: Rolf, was glaubst du, was beim Kochen passiert?

Rolf: Das ist etwas anderes ⍟.

Heike: Ist es nicht, Rolf. Du verbringst zu viel Zeit auf deinen komischen Seiten.

You just saw what conversational German looks like. The next parts are where passive understanding turns into real training reps: 2. listen → 3. understand → 4. write → 5. speak. That’s what makes conversational German start feeling more natural!

Part 3 - Understand 💡

Read the explanations & translation (Go through the explanations and translation. Take your time, this is where things click.)

A) Explanations 💬

tadellos – A precise spoken adjective used to describe something that is in perfect condition or working exactly as it should, with no flaws or complaints, common in everyday conversation when someone wants to make a strong, positive assessment without overstating it. (English: “perfectly fine” or “flawless” or “in great shape”, literal: “without fault”)

das glaube ich nicht – A calm, direct spoken phrase used to push back against a claim without getting heated, stating simple disbelief in a way that is firm but not aggressive, widely usable whenever someone wants to politely but clearly disagree. (English: “I don’t think so” or “I’m not buying that”, literal: “I don’t believe that”)

ach, echt? – A very common spoken reaction used to express sceptical surprise, somewhere between genuine curiosity and mild disbelief, the “ach” adding a tone of slight weariness that signals the speaker is not entirely convinced by what they’ve just heard. (English: “oh really?” or “is that so?”, literal: “oh, really?”)

na dann – A dry, resigned spoken phrase used to signal that you’ve heard enough and are choosing not to argue further, often delivered with flat sarcasm to indicate that the speaker finds the justification unconvincing but isn’t going to waste energy saying so. (English: “well then” or “right, if you say so”, literal: “well then”)

das ist etwas anderes – A classic spoken defensive move used to draw a distinction between two things that the other person is treating as equivalent, common whenever someone feels their comparison has been challenged and wants to insist the two situations are not the same. (English: “that’s different” or “that’s a different thing entirely”, literal: “that is something different”)

B) Translation 🔄

Rolf: I never charge my phone overnight. It completely destroys the battery.

Heike: Oh, rubbish! Where on earth did you hear that? Modern phones regulate that themselves. It's been that way for years. I charge my phone every night and the battery is perfectly fine.

Rolf: That's what you say now. In two years it'll probably look different.

Heike: I don't think so. Batteries age anyway. It has to do with the chemistry.

Rolf: I also read that you shouldn't have WiFi in the bedroom. The radiation disrupts deep sleep.

Heike: Oh really? From whom? Which website?

Rolf: It was a blog. The site looked very credible – lots of graphics.

Heike: Lots of graphics. Well then.

Rolf: And apparently microwaves alter the molecules in food in a way that means the body can't process it properly anymore.

Heike: Rolf, what do you think happens when you cook something?

Rolf: That's different.

Heike: It isn't, Rolf. You spend too much time on your weird websites.

Part 4 - Write ✍️

Writing Practice (this step is easy to skip, but it’s where real progress happens)

Answer ONE of these:

  • Wann denkst du: „Ach, Papperlapapp!“?

  • Warum glauben Menschen manchmal Dinge, die eigentlich Unsinn sind?

  • Wie reagierst du, wenn jemand etwas behauptet, das du für völligen Quatsch hältst?

Part 5 - Speak 🗣️

Spoken Conversation Practice (This is the part that gets you speaking more naturally, faster.)

Have a short 3–5 minute conversation with your favorite AI (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, etc.).

  • Follow today’s topic

  • Or choose your own

  • Ask the AI for corrections and feedback afterwards

AI isn't a substitute for real conversations with people, but it's a great way to practise when no conversation partner is available.

Wann denkst du dir: „Ach, Papperlapapp!“? 🙄😄

Send it to someone who regularly talks a little too much Papperlapapp. 👀
