Mogelpackung 📦

Rip-Off Packaging

Hallo zusammen!

Have you heard of Shrinkflation, or as many in Germany call it: a „Mogelpackung“?
Literally: a “trick package.” Big packaging, less product inside.

In Germany, people have been discussing this a lot lately because many everyday products seem suddenly smaller, emptier, and more expensive.

Once you start noticing it, you see it everywhere 👀

Let’s explore how you can talk about it in German…

Part 1 - Read 👀

Read the Dialogue (out loud if you can)

Nils: Schau mal. Diese Chipstüte. Die ist so groß wie mein Kopf.

Jana: Und?

Zwanzig.

Jana: Zähl nochmal. Ich glaub, du bist zu optimistisch.

You just saw what conversational German looks like. The next parts are where passive understanding turns into real training reps: 2. listen → 3. understand → 4. write → 5. speak. That’s what makes conversational German start feeling more natural!

Part 3 - Understand 💡

Read the explanations & translation (Go through the explanations and translation. Take your time, this is where things click.)

A) Explanations 💬

die haben mir buchstäblich Luft verkauft – A spoken expression used to call out a situation where you paid for something and got almost nothing of real substance in return, informal and expressive, usable well beyond shopping whenever someone feels cheated out of what they were promised. (English: “they literally sold me air”)

ich schwör dir – A casual spoken intensifier used to emphasise that something is genuinely true and you want the other person to take you seriously, common across all kinds of everyday conversations when a simple statement doesn’t feel strong enough. (English: “I swear to you” or “I’m telling you”, literal: “I swear to you”)

das ist ein echtes Ding – A casual spoken phrase used to confirm that something is a real, recognised phenomenon and not just something one person made up or imagined, often said when naming a trend, pattern, or problem the other person might not have heard of. (English: “that’s actually a thing” or “that’s a real thing”)

das ist so dreist – A direct, punchy spoken expression used to call out behaviour that is brazenly cheeky or shamelessly calculating, stronger than “frech” and carrying a clear sense of moral indignation without being aggressive. (English: “that’s so brazen” or “that’s just shameless”, literal: “that is so bold-faced”)

man fühlt sich echt verarscht – A blunt colloquial expression used to describe the feeling of having been taken for a fool or deliberately misled, common in informal spoken German when frustration tips into genuine offence. (English: “you really feel like you’ve been had” or “it genuinely feels like you’re being played”, literal: “one feels truly made an ass of”)

B) Translation 🔄

Nils: Look at this. This bag of crisps. It's as big as my head.

Jana: So?

Nils: Half of it is air. They literally sold me air for two ninety.

Jana: Yeah yeah… It's been like that for years – the packaging stays the same size, the contents get less, and then the price goes up on top of that. And most people don't even notice.

Nils: I noticed because I bought the same crisps last year. I swear to you, there was more in it. A lot more.

Jana: That's called shrinkflation. It's actually a thing. Nestlé, Unilever, Dr. Oetker – they all do it. The pizza got a centimetre smaller, the yoghurt pot now has a dent in the bottom, the chocolate has fewer segments.

Nils: The dent in the bottom – that's just shameless. They deliberately design a dent in so less fits inside and you don't notice.

Jana: And legally it's all allowed, as long as the weight is printed somewhere. Small print, on the back, where nobody looks.

Nils: You really feel like you've been had. They're counting on nobody weighing it out.

Jana: Most people don't check. They just reach for the usual brand, pay more, get less – and think that's just normal.

Nils: Things just used to have more in them.

Jana: A lot of things were different back then. But on the crisps front I'll give you that one.

Nils: There are maybe twenty crisps in there. Twenty.

Jana: Count again. I think you're being too optimistic.

Part 4 - Write ✍️

Writing Practice (this step is easy to skip, but it’s where real progress happens)

Answer ONE of these:

  • Hast du schon einmal eine „Mogelpackung“ gekauft? Was ist passiert?

  • Warum benutzen Firmen deiner Meinung nach solche Verpackungen?

  • Wie kann man sich als Kunde besser davor schützen?

Part 5 - Speak 🗣️

Spoken Conversation Practice (This is the part that gets you speaking more naturally, faster.)

Have a short 3–5 minute conversation with your favorite AI (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, etc.).

  • Follow today’s topic

  • Or choose your own

  • Ask the AI for corrections and feedback afterwards

AI isn’t a substitute for real conversations with people, but it’s a great way to practise when no conversation partner is available.

Früher war mehr drin 😤

If this dialogue made you suspicious of your next bag of chips, send it to someone who constantly complains about shrinkflation 😄
