Part 1 - Read 👀
Read the Dialogue (out loud if you can)
Cem: Nächster bitte! ⍟
Max: Ja, hi. Ein Döner, bitte.
Cem: Hähnchen oder Kalb?
Max: Hähnchen. Und äh … mit alles.
Cem: Mit allem, Bruder. Mit kommt immer im Dativ.
Max: Echt jetzt? ⍟ Sogar hier im Dönerladen krieg ich Grammatikunterricht?
Cem: Kostenlos, inklusive Soße. Also: mit allem?
Max: Ja, ja, mit allem. Man lernt nie aus. ⍟
Cem: Scharf?
Max: Ein bisschen.
Max: Sehr beruhigend.
Cem: So, fertig. Macht sechs Euro fünfzig.
Max: Passt so. ⍟ Danke dir.
Cem: Danke auch. Und denk dran: mit allem.
Max: Versprochen. Beim nächsten Mal korrigiere ich die anderen.
Part 2 - Listen 👂

Part 3 - Understand 💡
Read the explanations & translation (take your time, ask questions in the comments if something is unclear)
A) Explanations 💬
⍟ Nächster bitte! means “next, please,” used to call the next person in line in shops or food places, and it is neutral spoken German.
⍟ Echt jetzt? means “seriously?” used to show surprise or disbelief in everyday conversations, and it is informal spoken German.
⍟ Man lernt nie aus. means “you never stop learning,” used as a light comment when you realize something new, and it is neutral spoken German.
⍟ Klingt gut. means “sounds good,” used for quick agreement to a suggestion or plan, and it is neutral spoken German.
⍟ Passt so. means “keep the change” or “that is fine,” used when paying and you do not want any change back, and it is everyday spoken German that is informal to neutral.
B) Translation 🔄
Cem: Next, please!
Max: Yeah, hi. One döner, please.
Cem: Chicken or veal?
Max: Chicken. And uh… with everything.
Cem: With allem, brother. Mit always takes the dative.
Max: Seriously? Even here at the kebab shop I’m getting a grammar lesson?
Cem: Free of charge, sauce included. So: with everything?
Max: Yeah, yeah, with everything. You never stop learning.
Cem: Spicy?
Max: A little. Not so much that I’ll regret it tomorrow.
Cem: All right. Lettuce, tomatoes, onions, red cabbage, white cabbage?
Max: Sounds good. But please not too much onion. I’ve still got a meeting later.
Cem: Got it. We don’t want to provoke any resignations.
Max: Which sauce do you recommend?
Cem: Classic: garlic and herbs. I’ll make the spicy separately so you can control how much you use.
Max: Perfect. And make the bread nice and crispy, if possible.
Cem: Always doable. Fresh off the grill.
Max: Hey, how many people still say “mit alles,” anyway?
Cem: More than I’d like. But don’t worry, you’re on the right side of history now.
Max: Very reassuring.
Cem: Alright, done. That’ll be six fifty.
Max: Keep the change. Thanks.
Cem: Thanks to you too. And remember: with allem.
Max: Promise. Next time I’ll correct the others.
Part 4 - Write ✍️
Writing Practice (don’t skip, writing trains your brain to actively form sentences, and this carries over into speaking)
Answer ONE of these:
Wann hast du zuletzt einen Döner gegessen? Hat’s geschmeckt?
Wie magst du deinen Döner? Scharf?
Wie viel kostet ein Döner bei dir? Findest du das teuer?
Send me your text by replying to this email, and I will answer + give feedback to the first 20 replies!
(check your spam folder just in case)
💬 Alternatively:
Post your answer in the comments.
(you are more likely to get feedback)
Part 5 - Speak 🗣️
Spoken Conversation Practice (This is the part that gets you speaking more naturally, faster.)
Have a short 3–5 minute conversation with your favorite AI (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, etc.).
Follow today’s topic
Or choose your own
Ask the AI for corrections and feedback afterwards
AI isn’t a substitute for real conversations with people, but it’s a great way to practise when no conversation partner is available.
I’d love to hear from you!
