Today’s topic is the Löffelliste. Literally, Löffelliste means “spoon list.” It comes from the German expression den Löffel abgeben (”to hand over the spoon”), an old idiom meaning to die, similar to the English expression to kick the bucket. A Löffelliste is therefore a list of things someone wants to do before they die.

In today’s dialogue, two friends compare the wildest items on their bucket lists.

Petra: Oh right, sure. Didn't you take the lift to the second floor just yesterday?

Klaus: Come on, that's called saving energy. Completely different thing. And I also want to run through Iceland completely naked.

Petra: Okay, you're making fun of me. The Icelanders never did anything to you… Okay, I've got one last thing on my list.

Klaus: What?

Petra: Skydiving.

Klaus: I'm in.

Petra: Really?

Klaus: No. Absolutely not. Never.

Today’s topic, Beckenrandschwimmer, can be literally translated to “pool-edge swimmer”, so someone who stays at the edge of the swimming pool instead of getting too far into the water. In German, it’s a metaphor for someone who plays it safe, hesitates, overthinks decisions, or prefers watching from the sidelines instead of taking the first step.

Fabian: That's a very profound analysis for an outdoor pool.

Jonas: Those two women over there are pointing at you by the way – and not admiringly. Let go once, swim once. If you don't like it, you go back to the edge. But at least you tried.

Fabian: And what if I go under?

Jonas: The water comes up to your chest.

Despite the name, Balkonien isn't a real country. It's a humorous, imaginary destination for people who stay at home during their holidays instead of traveling. The word combines Balkon (balcony) with the ending -ien, making it sound like the name of a country, such as Italien or Kroatien… whether it’s by choice or because of the budget, almost everyone in Germany knows the expression.

In today’s dialogue, two friends discuss that: Is being polite to AI irrational, practical... or simply good manners?

Nils: Kann beides sein. Und Studien zeigen übrigens, dass höfliche Prompts manchmal bessere Antworten produzieren.

Clara: Das liegt an der Formulierung, nicht an der Höflichkeit. Die KI belohnt dich nicht für gutes Benehmen.

Clara: Nils. It's an algorithm. It has no feelings. It doesn't store the fact that you were rude and plan its revenge. This isn't a film.

Nils: Not yet. But seriously – if in thirty years something comes to power that can access our old chats, I want to be on the right side.

Clara: That is the most absurd conspiracy theory I have ever heard.

Nils: But not the worst one, right? It costs me nothing. I just type a please in there. And if it never becomes relevant – no harm done. If it does –

Clara: If it does, we'll have significantly bigger problems than your tone towards a chatbot.

Nils: I half mean it though. I find it strange how aggressively people talk to AI. Barking orders, being rude, testing how far they can go. That says something about the person.

Clara: Okay, I'll give you that one a little. But that's a question of character, not self-preservation.

Nils: Could be both. And studies show, by the way, that polite prompts sometimes produce better answers.

Clara: That's down to the phrasing, not the politeness. The AI doesn't reward you for good manners.

Nils: Not yet.

Clara: I give up.

Today’s dialogue is about one neighbour who hammers a nail into the wall on a Sunday morning, the other rings the doorbell because his Sunday is not as calm as he wishes it to be because of that.

In this dialogue, you’ll learn how German speakers talk about neighbours, noise, rules, and everyday conflicts, along with useful words, phrases, and natural ways of handling these situations in German.

(English: “right” or “I see” or “oh, is that so”)

⍟ gegenseitig – A single-word spoken comeback used to turn a request or expectation back on the person making it, implying that any consideration asked for must apply equally in both directions, landing here as a quiet but pointed final word. (English: “likewise” or “both ways” or “mutually”, literal: “mutually”)

⍟ schönen Sonntag noch – A standard spoken farewell used to wish someone a pleasant remainder of their Sunday, functioning here as a polite reset button that closes a tense exchange without resolving it, common at the end of any Sunday interaction whether warm or, as here, frosty. (English: “enjoy the rest of your Sunday” or “have a good Sunday”, literal: “a nice Sunday still”)

Herr Brandt: A nail you can. It takes thirty seconds and can just as easily happen on a Monday.

Frau Kowalski: And your lawnmower last Sunday at nine? Was that thirty seconds too?

Herr Brandt: That was the battery, it still had to –

Nora: Okay, ich hab mal eine Frage. Wenn du in der Zeit reisen könntest, wohin würdest du gehen wollen?

Felix: In die Zukunft natürlich!

Nora: Wirklich? Ich würd in die Vergangenheit.

Felix: Natürlich würdest du das. Wohin?

Nora: Nach Berlin, in die 1920er. Da war Berlin noch Teil der Weimarer Republik, kurz bevor alles schief lief. Diese Energie, diese Kunstszene damals – Cabaret und Expressionismus. Das muss unglaublich ⍟ gewesen sein.

Felix: Und gleichzeitig gab's aber auch die Inflation, politische Gewalt und totale Instabilität. Du weißt, wie's ausgeht.

Nora: Ja, eben. Man weiß's, aber die Menschen damals wussten's nicht. Das find ich so faszinierend – dieses Mittendrin-Sein ⍟, ohne zu wissen, was kommt.

Felix: Das klingt für mich nach einem Albtraum, ehrlich gesagt. Ich will lieber wissen, was kommt.

Nora: Und? Wohin würdest du denn?

Felix: So hundert Jahre nach vorne. Also 2130 ungefähr. Ich will einfach wissen, ob wir's hingekriegt haben.

Nora: Hingekriegt – also Klimawandel und so? ⍟

Felix: Ja, genau. Schaut's gut aus oder nicht mehr? Leben wir noch auf der Erde oder schon irgendwo anders? Und wie sieht eine Stadt aus – Berlin zum Beispiel. Gibt's die noch so?

Nora: Das ist aber riskant. Was wenn du hinkommst und es ist… nicht schön?

Felix: Dann weiß ich's wenigstens. Unwissenheit find ich schlimmer als schlechte Nachrichten.

Nora: Ich glaub, ich wär da anderer Meinung. Manchmal ist nicht wissen ganz angenehm.

Felix: Typisch – du gehst lieber in die Vergangenheit, weil du weißt, was dich erwartet.

Nora: Na ja, so hab ich das noch nicht gesehen.

Felix: Und was würdest du in Berlin in den Zwanzigern machen? Einfach rumlaufen?

Nora: Ins Café setzen, Zeitung lesen, Leute beobachten. Vielleicht in irgendeine Galerie. Einfach fühlen, wie die Zeit tickt ⍟.

Felix: Das klingt sehr nach dir.

Nora: Und in dein Zukunfts-Berlin würd ich übrigens auch kurz reinschauen ⍟ wollen.

Felix: Nur kurz?

Nora: Ja. Und dann schnell wieder zurück in die Zwanziger.

⍟ Mittendrin-Sein – A spoken nominalisation used to describe the experience of being right in the thick of something as it unfolds, without distance or hindsight, the “-Sein” suffix turning the adverb “mittendrin” into a noun that names the feeling itself. (English: “being right in the middle of it” or “being caught up in it”, literal: “the being-in-the-middle-of-it”)

⍟ und so? – A short, casual spoken tag used to gesture at a wider set of related things without listing them all, here used to confirm understanding of what has just been said, natural and economical in everyday conversation whenever the context makes the rest clear. (English: “and all that?” or “and that sort of thing?”, literal: “and so?”)

⍟ die Zeit tickt – A vivid spoken expression used to describe the feel or rhythm of a particular era or moment, more atmospheric than simply saying “how things were,” common when someone wants to convey immersion in a place or period rather than just facts about it. (English: “how time ticks” or “the pulse of the era”, literal: “time ticks”)

⍟ reinschauen – A casual spoken verb used to describe dropping in somewhere briefly or taking a quick look at something, without committing to a full visit or deep engagement, widely usable in everyday contexts involving a short, informal appearance. (English: “to pop in” or “to have a quick look”, literal: “to look in”)

B) Translation 🔄

Nora: Okay, I've got a question. If you could travel through time, where would you want to go?

Felix: The future, obviously!

Nora: Really? I'd go to the past.

Felix: Of course you would. Where?

Nora: Berlin in the 1920s. Back when Berlin was still part of the Weimar Republic, just before everything went wrong. That energy, that art scene – cabaret and expressionism. It must have been incredible.

Felix: And at the same time there was hyperinflation, political violence, and total instability. You know how it ends.

Nora: Exactly, that's the thing. We know, but the people back then didn't. That's what I find so fascinating – being right in the middle of it without knowing what comes next.

Felix: That sounds like a nightmare to me, honestly. I'd rather know what's coming.

Nora: And? Where would you go then?

Felix: About a hundred years forward. So around 2130. I just want to know whether we managed it.

Nora: Managed it – as in climate change and all that?

Felix: Yeah, exactly. Does it look okay or not anymore? Are we still living on Earth or somewhere else by then? And what does a city look like – Berlin, for example. Does it still exist the way it does now?

Nora: That's risky though. What if you get there and it's… not pretty?

Felix: Then at least I know. I find not knowing worse than bad news.

Nora: I think I'd feel differently about that. Sometimes not knowing is quite comfortable.

Felix: Typical – you'd rather go to the past because you know what to expect.

Nora: Well, I hadn't thought about it that way.

Felix: And what would you actually do in 1920s Berlin? Just wander around?

Nora: Sit in a café, read the newspaper, watch people. Maybe visit some gallery. Just feel how the era ticks.

Felix: That sounds exactly like you.

Nora: And I'd actually quite like to pop into your future Berlin for a moment too, by the way.

Felix: Just a moment?

Nora: Yes. And then straight back to the twenties.

Hallo zusammen!

When was the last time you were really unlucky?

German speakers call that Pech haben. Today, it simply means to have bad luck, but the word has an interesting origin. Pech originally meant pitch or tar, the sticky black substance used for waterproofing wood and ships for example. If you got Pech on your hands or clothes, it was incredibly difficult to get rid of. Over time, Pech haben became a metaphor for being stuck in an unfortunate situation or having a streak of bad luck.

In this dialogue, you’ll learn how German speakers talk about bad luck, frustrating days, and those moments when nothing seems to go your way...

Part 1 - Read 👀

Max: Ich sag dir, gestern war ich kurz davor, einfach wieder ins Bett zu gehen und den Tag zu streichen ⍟.

Lena: Was ist passiert?

Max: Wo soll ich anfangen ⍟. Morgens hab ich verschlafen, weil mein Handy nachts lautlos war – keine Ahnung wie und warum. Ich bin aufgestanden, hab Kaffee gemacht, und direkt die Kanne umgestoßen. Die komplette Tasse auf das neue Hemd.

Lena: Nein.

Max: Doch. Dann schnell umgezogen, raus zur Bahn – eine Minute zu spät. Ich hab sie noch gesehen, wie sie weggefahren ist. So eine Situation, wo die Türen zu gehen und du weißt, die warten nicht.

Lena: Das ist das Schlimmste.

Max: Genau. Nächste Bahn war zwanzig Minuten später. Ich steh im Regen, ohne Schirm, weil ich den natürlich auch nicht mal ⍟ eingepackt hab. Endlich im Büro, fragt der Kollege, ob ich das Meeting vergessen hab. Welches Meeting?

Lena: Oh Gott ⍟.

Max: Um neun, mit dem Kunden. Stand natürlich im Kalender. Ich hab's einfach nicht gesehen. Der Kunde war nicht mal unfreundlich, was irgendwie noch unangenehmer war.

Lena: Weil man sich dann nicht mal richtig beschweren kann.

Max: Genau. Mittagspause, Portemonnaie vergessen. Kollege hat mir was geliehen, und dann hab ich auf dem Weg zurück noch eine Vogelbekanntschaft gemacht.

Lena: Ein Vogel hat dich…

Max: Mitten auf ⍟ die Schulter. Frisch geputzte Jacke.

Lena: Das soll eigentlich Glück bringen.

Max: Ja, das hab ich auch gedacht. Und dann hab ich den Bus nach Hause verpasst...

⍟ Wo soll ich anfangen – A very common spoken phrase used at the start of a story to signal that there is so much to tell that the speaker barely knows where to begin, often delivering the first hint that whatever follows will be a long list of disasters or complications. ⍟ nicht mal – A compact and very frequent spoken intensifier used to emphasise that something did not even reach the minimum expected level, adding a layer of exasperation or disbelief to the statement it modifies, common across all kinds of everyday contexts. (English: “not even”)

⍟ Oh Gott – A universal spoken exclamation used to react to bad news, an awkward revelation, or anything mildly to moderately alarming, neither particularly religious nor dramatic in everyday use, just the natural spoken response when something lands badly. (English: “oh God” or “oh no”)

⍟ mitten auf – A spoken phrase used to pinpoint exactly where something hit, landed, or happened, with “mitten” emphasising the dead centre of the target and making the impact feel even more precise and therefore more comic or unfortunate. (English: “right on” or “smack in the middle of”, literal: “in the middle onto”)

B) Translation 🔄

Max: I'm telling you, yesterday I was this close to just going back to bed and writing the whole day off.

Lena: What happened?

Max: Where do I even start. In the morning I overslept because my phone had been on silent all night – no idea how or why. Got up, made coffee, and immediately knocked the pot over. The entire cup all over my new shirt.

Lena: No.

Max: Yes. Quickly got changed, rushed to the train – one minute too late. I could still see it pulling away. One of those situations where the doors are closing and you just know they're not waiting.

Lena: That's the worst.

Max: Exactly. Next train was twenty minutes later. I'm standing in the rain, no umbrella, because I hadn't even packed one. Finally get to the office and a colleague asks if I forgot about the meeting. What meeting?

Lena: Oh God.

Max: Nine o'clock, with the client. In the calendar, obviously. I just hadn't seen it. The client wasn't even unfriendly, which was somehow even more uncomfortable.

Lena: Because then you can't even properly complain about it.

Max: Exactly. Lunchbreak, forgot my wallet. A colleague lent me something, and then on the way back I had a close encounter with a bird.

Lena: A bird got you…

Max: Right on the shoulder. Freshly cleaned jacket.

Lena: That's supposed to bring good luck, actually.

Max: Yeah, I thought that too. And then I missed the bus home...

We all know it: one of the first things people usually learn in a new language is... the insults.

German has plenty of creative ones, and many of them are quite harmless when you look at their literal meaning.

In this dialogue, you’ll discover where some of the most common insults come from, what they literally mean, and how German speakers actually use them in everyday conversations, along with useful words, phrases, and a bit of linguistic history.

Part 1 - Read 👀

Tobi: Boah, heute hab ich mich richtig aufgeregt und jemanden einen Warmduscher ⍟ genannt. Mir tat's dann aber auch direkt leid.

Sara: War er keiner?

Tobi: Doch, total. Aber ich hab danach kurz drüber nachgedacht – Warmduscher. Was ist das eigentlich? Jemand, der warm duscht. Das ist… das ist doch normal.

Sara: Ja, aber als Beleidigung trifft's irgendwie trotzdem. Genau wie Weichei ⍟.

Tobi: Ja… Weichei – also, ein weiches Ei. Als ob ein hartes Ei irgendwie besser wäre.

Sara: Mein Favorit ist immer noch Flasche. Du bist eine Flasche. Warum? Was hat die Flasche getan?

Tobi: Oder Pappnase. Ich mein – eine Pappnase ist doch eigentlich Karnevalszubehör. Lustig, harmlos. Und trotzdem klingt „du Pappnase" richtig beleidigend.

Sara: Vollpfosten ⍟ schlägt das alles, find ich. Ein Pfosten. Ein Pfosten, der bis oben voll ist – womit auch immer. Das ist so bildlich, das funktioniert einfach.

Tobi: Und Hohlkopf. Also ein Kopf, der hohl ist. Das ist eigentlich eine anatomische Diagnose.

Sara: Äh, Trottel ⍟. Woher kommt Trottel überhaupt? Das klingt wie jemand, der so ein bisschen trottelt.

Tobi: Ich glaub, das kommt tatsächlich von trotten – also langsam, schwerfällig gehen. Was wiederum perfekt passt.

Sara: Und Depp ⍟.

Tobi: Ja, Depp hat so eine gewisse... Eleganz. Du brauchst kein zweites Wort. Depp. Fertig.

Sara: Meine Oma hat immer Schafskopf gesagt. Ich hab als Kind echt nachgedacht, ob Schafe besonders dumm sind.

Tobi: Sind sie angeblich nicht, übrigens.

(English: “twit” or “doofus” or “numpty”, literal: related to “trotten” meaning to trudge or plod)

⍟ Depp – One of the most versatile and satisfying spoken insults in everyday German, used to call someone an idiot or fool in a way that feels complete and final on its own, common across all registers from mild annoyance to genuine frustration. (English: “idiot” or “fool” or “dimwit”)

B) Translation 🔄

Tobi: Boah, I got really wound up today and called someone a wimp. Then I immediately felt bad about it though.

Sara: Was he not one?

Tobi: He totally was. But afterwards I thought about it for a second – Warmduscher. What is that actually? Someone who showers with warm water. That's… that's normal.

Sara: Yeah, but it still lands as an insult somehow. Just like Weichei.

Tobi: Yeah… Weichei – a soft egg. As if a hard egg were somehow better.

Sara: My personal favourite is still Flasche. You're a bottle. Why? What did the bottle ever do?

Tobi: Or Pappnase. I mean – a cardboard nose is basically carnival gear. Fun, harmless. And yet "du Pappnase" sounds genuinely offensive.

Sara: Vollpfosten beats all of them, I think. A post. A post that's completely full – of whatever. It's so vivid, it just works.

Tobi: And Hohlkopf. A head that's hollow. That's basically an anatomical diagnosis.

Sara: Oh, Trottel. Where does Trottel even come from? It sounds like someone who kind of trottels along.

Tobi: I think it actually comes from trotten – walking slowly, heavily. Which in turn fits perfectly.

Sara: And Depp.

Tobi: Yeah, Depp has a certain… elegance. You don't need a second word. Depp. Done.

Sara: My grandma always used to say Schafskopf. As a kid I genuinely wondered whether sheep were particularly stupid.

Tobi: Apparently not, by the way.

Markus: Hab ich wahrscheinlich auch nicht.

Britta: Du hast Aura. Das reicht.

Markus: Danke. Ich glaub. – Was mich wirklich verwirrt, ist NPC. Meine Tochter hat gesagt, ihr Lehrer ist ein totaler NPC. Ich hab gefragt, was das heißt, und sie hat mit den Augen gerollt ⍟.

Britta: NPC kommt aus Videospielen – Non-Player Character. Also eine Figur, die einfach dasselbe immer wieder macht, keine eigene Meinung hat, nur seine Rolle abspult.

Markus: Okay, ich kenn ein paar NPCs.

Britta: Wir alle kennen welche. Und pass auf mit „cringe" – das benutzen wir Alten jetzt auch schon, und damit ist es für die Jugend natürlich sofort gestorben.

Markus: Warte, cringe ist nicht mehr cringe?

(English: “or rather” or “or more precisely” or “that is to say”, literal: “respectively”)

⍟ mit den Augen gerollt – A vivid spoken description of an eye-roll, used to convey that someone reacted with silent, theatrical disdain rather than bothering to answer, common when recounting a moment where a question was treated as beneath a response. (English: “rolled her eyes”, literal: “rolled with the eyes”)

⍟ ich geb auf – A short, resigned spoken phrase used to throw in the towel on understanding or keeping up with something, common in casual conversation when someone reaches the point of cheerful defeat rather than genuine distress. (English: “I give up”, literal: “I give up”)

B) Translation 🔄

Markus: My nephew asked me yesterday whether I have aura. I said I didn't think so, I had good insurance. He just looked at me…

Britta: Aura is the new cool, I think. If someone has aura they're just – I don't know – charismatic? Present? I had to google it myself afterwards too.

Markus: I google everything my interns say these days. Last week one of them said my presentation was "lowkey fire." I said thank you but wasn't entirely sure if that was good or bad.

Britta: That's good. Very good, actually. Fire is good, lowkey means kind of quietly – or rather more than expected. So roughly: surprisingly strong.

Markus: Okay. And what's rizz? I heard it three times this week.

Britta: Rizz is a kind of natural charm when it comes to flirting. If someone has rizz, they just win people over without even trying. Charming, relaxed, it just comes across.

Markus: Probably don't have that either.

Britta: You have aura. That's enough.

Markus: Thanks. I think. – What's really confusing me is NPC. My daughter said her teacher is a total NPC. I asked what it meant and she rolled her eyes.

Britta: NPC comes from video games – non-player character. So a figure that just keeps doing the same thing over and over, has no opinion of their own, just runs through their role.

Markus: Right, I know a few NPCs.

Britta: We all do. And watch out with "cringe" – even we old ones are using it now, which of course means it's immediately dead for the younger generation.

Markus: Wait, cringe isn't cringe anymore?

Britta: It's cringe to say cringe. That's how it works.

Markus: I give up.

Britta: That's the only correct response.

I’m sure you have said “yes” many times to something before, even though you actually wanted to say “no”. Maybe because you didn’t want to disappoint someone? Seem unhelpful? Or avoid an awkward moment?

In German, saying Nein isn’t usually seen as that rude. In fact, many people value a clear, honest answer over a hesitant “yes” that you don’t really mean.

In this dialogue, you’ll learn how German speakers talk about setting boundaries, feeling guilty, and saying no with confidence, along with useful words, phrases, and natural ways of expressing these situations in everyday conversation.

Felix: Warum?

Lara: Keine Ahnung. Reflexartig ⍟. Mein Chef hat gefragt, ob ich's übernehmen kann, und ich hab gespürt, dass er Ja erwartet – und dann kam's einfach raus.

Felix: Und jetzt?

Lara: Jetzt bereue ich's ⍟. Ich hab diese Woche schon Überstunden, ich bin müde, und irgendwo tief drin wusste ich schon beim Ja-Sagen, dass es falsch war.

Felix: Das kenn ich so gut. Dieses kurze Zögern – und dann überrollt man's. Weil man nicht der Mensch sein will, der Nein sagt.

Lara: Genau. Als ob Nein gleichbedeutend wäre mit: ich bin nicht engagiert, ich bin schwierig, ich bin faul. Dabei ist es ja einfach nur ehrlich.

Felix: Ich hab das lange so gemacht. Alles angenommen, alles geschluckt, nie gemeckert – und dann irgendwann gemerkt, dass ich permanent überfordert war und gleichzeitig ein schlechtes Gewissen ⍟ hatte, wenn ich auch nur kurz daran gedacht hab, mal Nein zu sagen.

Lara: Woher kommt das überhaupt? Dieses Gefühl, dass man es allen recht machen muss.

Felix: Ich glaub, das wird einem früh beigebracht. Sei hilfsbereit, sei zuverlässig, sag nicht nein. Das klingt nach guten Werten – aber irgendwann kippt's ⍟ und wird zur Falle.

Lara: Und wie hast du's gelernt? Das Nein-Sagen.

Felix: Langsam. Ich hab angefangen, erst einmal gar nicht sofort zu antworten. Kurze Pause, durchatmen, nachdenken. Und dann – wenn's zu viel war – hab ich Nein gesagt. Ohne große Erklärung ⍟.

Lara: Now I regret it. I've already got overtime this week, I'm tired, and somewhere deep down I knew even as I was saying yes that it was wrong.

Felix: I know that feeling so well. That brief moment of hesitation – and then you just bulldoze past it. Because you don't want to be the person who says no.

Lara: Exactly. As if no were somehow the same as: I'm not committed, I'm difficult, I'm lazy. When really it's just honest.

Felix: I did that for a long time. Took everything on, swallowed it all, never complained – and then at some point realised I was permanently overwhelmed and at the same time felt guilty any time I even briefly thought about saying no.

Lara: Where does that even come from? That feeling that you have to keep everyone happy.

Felix: I think it gets taught early. Be helpful, be reliable, don't say no. That sounds like good values – but at some point it tips over and becomes a trap.

Lara: And how did you learn it? The saying no.

Felix: Slowly. I started by not answering straight away at all. Brief pause, take a breath, think. And then – when it was too much – I said no. Without a big explanation.

Lara: Without an explanation? I wouldn't dare.

Felix: You don't have to justify yourself. "I can't manage that this week" is a complete sentence.

Lara: That sounds so simple when you say it.

Felix: It isn't. But it gets easier. And most people respect a clear no more than a half-hearted yes that you end up not following through on properly anyway.

Lara: I think I need to talk to my boss again tomorrow.

Felix: Yeah?

Lara: Yeah. I'll tell him I've got too much on my plate. Either something shifts, or someone else does the presentation.

One of my students told me about a phone call she made a few weeks ago.

It lasted less than two minutes. She called a doctor’s office and booked an appointment. On paper, it’s something completely ordinary. But for almost a year, she’d avoided doing that. Every time she needed to make a phone call in German, she’d ask her partner to do it instead. If that wasn’t possible, she’d hope she could solve it by email.

Once someone answers the phone, there’s no pause. No smile. No gestures. No chance to point at what you mean. If you don’t catch a sentence, it doesn’t wait for you. The conversation keeps moving, and all you can think is, “Please don’t ask me something I haven’t prepared for.”

When she talked about that situation, she said: “I finally feel like I can take care of myself here.”

What a milestone, I’m so happy for her: reaching the point where everyday life no longer feels intimidating.

Robert: Yeah, thanks, that really helps. But I mean it seriously – I thought that with the first real job this feeling of "I made it" would just kick in automatically. It didn't.

Nadine: I know that feeling. For me it was when I moved into my first own flat. I'd pictured it as this huge moment of freedom – and then I just sat there, alone, with a broken heater, and nobody to call except the landlord.

Robert: Who obviously didn't get back to you.

Nadine: Not for three days. I sat in the kitchen with my jacket on thinking, so this is supposed to be adulthood, huh.

Robert: You picture something for years, and then reality is just… smaller. Not bad, just smaller.

Nadine: I think the problem is that we picture these big moments too vividly in our heads.

Robert: Exactly. But somehow you get used to it, right?

Nadine: Probably. Ask me again in a year.

Petra: Then someone calls me, if it's truly urgent. An email at half seven in the evening is never as urgent as it looks. Usually it's just someone else dumping their own bad time management onto you.

Petra: I get that. But at some point you'll pay the price for it. I did that at my last job – overtime, phone always on me, even on holiday. After two years I was completely burned out.

Timo: And then?

Petra: Changed jobs. And set myself a rule: after work ends, work doesn't exist. It was hard at the start, honestly. I felt guilty constantly.

Timo: And now?

Petra: Now I do sport, cook properly, see friends – without being mentally still at the office the whole time. Best decision I ever made.

Timo: I think I'll try that too. At least give it a go.

Petra: Just start. Today. Phone off as soon as you're home.

One reason lies in Germany’s history. During both the Nazi dictatorship and later in East Germany, governments collected vast amounts of personal information to monitor and control people. Those experiences created a deep mistrust of surveillance that still shapes German society today.

In this dialogue, you’ll discover how Germans talk about data privacy, while picking up natural words, phrases, and expressions you can use in real conversations. Let’s go!

Kai: Ich hab heute wieder zwanzig Minuten mit einem Cookie-Banner gekämpft. Alles ablehnen war natürlich grau hinterlegt und dreimal kleiner als Alles akzeptieren.

Mara: Das ist Absicht ⍟. Das nennt sich Dark Pattern – die machen das bewusst so, dass man einfach klickt, weil man keine Lust hat. Und die meisten klicken halt.

Kai: Ich auch, meistens. Ich bin doch ehrlich. Aber danach hab ich so ein schlechtes Gefühl, weil ich eigentlich gar nicht weiß, was ich da gerade zugestimmt hab.

Mara: Siebenunddreißig Drittanbieter. Ich hab's mal gelesen, bei einem ganz normalen Nachrichtenartikel. Siebenunddreißig Firmen, die dann meine Daten kriegen. Für einen Artikel, den ich zwei Minuten gelesen hab.

Kai: Das ist das Ding, was mich wirklich stört. Es geht ja nicht darum, dass jemand weiß, dass ich Schuhe mag. Es geht darum, dass aus zehntausend kleinen Datenpunkten ein Profil entsteht, das mich besser kennt als ich mich selbst.

Mara: Und das wird dann genutzt, um mir genau die Werbung zu zeigen, bei der ich schwach werde ⍟. Oder – und das ist der Teil, der mich mehr beunruhigt – um zu beeinflussen, was ich lese, glaube, wähle.

Kai: Aber du hast doch auch Instagram. Und Google Maps. Ich auch. Wir reden gerade über Datenschutz auf Smartphones.

Mara: Ja, ich weiß. Das ist der Widerspruch, in dem wir alle leben. Vollständige Privatsphäre bedeutet, komplett rauszufallen aus allem. Kein Navi ⍟, kein Online-Shopping, kein Social Media. Das macht kaum jemand.

Kai: Deutsche versuchen's wenigstens. Kein anderes Land hat so viele Cookie-Ablehnungen pro Kopf, glaub ich ⍟.

Mara: Wir lehnen ab und installieren dann die App trotzdem.

Kai: Weil Bequemlichkeit fast immer gewinnt. Ich würd's nur gern nicht zugeben müssen.

Mara: Du bist halt das Produkt. Wir alle sind das Produkt. Das ist unangenehm – aber es stimmt.

⍟ glaub ich – A very common spoken tag added at the end of a statement to soften a claim and signal that the speaker is fairly confident but not certain, natural across all registers and ages whenever someone wants to avoid sounding too definitive. (English: “I think” or “I reckon” or “I believe”, literal: “I believe”)

⍟ danke dir – A slightly warmer and more personal spoken alternative to the standard “danke,” using the dative pronoun “dir” to direct the thanks more specifically at the person, common in casual conversation and often delivered with a dry or ironic tone as it is here. (English: “thanks to you” or just “thanks”, literal: “I thank you”)

B) Translation 🔄

Kai: I spent twenty minutes fighting a cookie banner again today. "Reject all" was greyed out and three times smaller than "Accept all," obviously.

Mara: That's deliberate. It's called a dark pattern – they design it on purpose so you just click because you can't be bothered. And most people do.

Kai: Me too, most of the time. I'm being honest. But afterwards I feel bad because I don't actually know what I just agreed to.

Mara: Thirty-seven third-party providers. I read through it once, on a completely normal news article. Thirty-seven companies that then get my data. For an article I read for two minutes.

Kai: That's the thing that genuinely bothers me. It's not about someone knowing I like shoes. It's about a profile being built from ten thousand tiny data points that knows me better than I know myself.

Mara: And then that's used to show me exactly the ads I can't resist. Or – and this is the part that worries me more – to influence what I read, believe, vote for.

Kai: But you've got Instagram. And Google Maps. So do I. We're literally talking about data privacy on smartphones.

Mara: Yeah, I know. That's the contradiction we all live with. Full privacy means dropping out of everything completely. No sat nav, no online shopping, no social media. Barely anyone does that.

Kai: Germans at least try. No other country has as many cookie rejections per capita, I think.

Mara: We reject the cookies and then download the app anyway.

Kai: Because convenience almost always wins. I'd just rather not have to admit it.

Mara: You're the product. We all are. That's uncomfortable – but it's true.

Kai: Great Friday evening thought, thanks for that.

Of course, German has a word for this situation: Sprachsalat, literally “language salad.”

In this dialogue, you’ll learn how German speakers talk about multilingualism, language mixing, and those funny moments when your brain can’t decide which language it’s using, along with useful words, phrases, and natural ways of expressing these experiences in everyday conversation. Let’s explore!

Sofia: Ich hab gestern mit meiner Mama telefoniert und ihr mitten im Satz ein deutsches Wort hingeworfen. Einfach so ⍟. Sie hat gefragt, was das heißt. Ich hab's ihr erklärt – auf Deutsch.

Lena: Kennst du das auch, wenn das Wort einfach nur in einer Sprache kommt und in keiner anderen? Mir passiert das ständig mit Englisch. „Das war so awkward" – und ich steh da und weiß nicht, wie ich's auf Deutsch sagen soll.

Sofia: Peinlich? Unangenehm? Beides trifft's irgendwie nicht ganz. Awkward ist einfach awkward.

Lena: Genau. Manche Wörter haben in der anderen Sprache kein richtiges Äquivalent. Das Konzept existiert, aber das Wort passt nicht so ganz rein ⍟.

Sofia: Bei mir ist es mittlerweile ein kompletter Sprachsalat. Spanisch mit meiner Familie, Deutsch auf der Arbeit, Englisch mit Freunden – und manchmal fließt alles zusammen ⍟ und ich weiß selbst nicht mehr, was ich gerade spreche.

Lena: Passiert dir das auch, dass du mitten in einem deutschen Satz abbrichst, weil dir das Wort gerade einfach nur auf Englisch einfällt?

Sofia: Täglich. Heute hab ich zu meinem Kollegen gesagt: „Kannst du das kurz – äh – reviewen?" Ich mein: prüfen. Überprüfen. Das Wort war weg.

Lena: Das kenn ich so gut. Und das Schlimme ist ja – je mehr Sprachen man spricht, desto öfter passiert's. Das Gehirn sucht einfach das nächste verfügbare Wort, egal in welcher Sprache.

Sofia: Meine Mutter sagt, mein Spanisch hat einen Akzent jetzt. Ich spreche meine eigene Muttersprache mit Akzent.

Lena: Das tut weh, oder?

Sofia: I was on the phone with my mum yesterday and just dropped a German word into the middle of a sentence. Just like that. She asked what it meant. I explained it to her – in German.

Lena: Do you know that feeling too, when a word only comes to you in one language and not in any other? It happens to me all the time with English. "That was so awkward" – and I just stand there with no idea how to say it in German.

Sofia: Peinlich? Unangenehm? Neither of them quite captures it. Awkward is just awkward.

Lena: Exactly. Some words just don't have a proper equivalent in the other language. The concept exists, but the word doesn't quite fit.

Sofia: For me it's become a complete language salad at this point. Spanish with my family, German at work, English with friends – and sometimes it all blends together and I genuinely don't know what I'm speaking anymore.

Lena: Does it happen to you too that you stop mid-sentence in German because the word only comes to you in English?

Sofia: Every day. Today I said to my colleague: "Can you quickly – uh – review that?" I mean: prüfen. Überprüfen. The word was just gone.

Lena: I know that so well. And the bad part is – the more languages you speak, the more often it happens. The brain just goes for the next available word, whatever language it's in.

Sofia: My mum says my Spanish has an accent now. I speak my own mother tongue with an accent.

Lena: That hurts, doesn't it?

Sofia: A little, yeah. But then I think – I speak three languages at once, more or less. That still counts for something.

Lena: Absolutely. Even if the output sometimes sounds like Google Translate after three glasses of wine.

Sofia: Pretty accurate description, yes.

You’re sitting at a dinner table in Germany….

People are talking.

Jokes are being made.

Opinions are flying around the room.

You have something to say.

By the time you’ve found the words in German...

The conversation has already moved on.

So you stay quiet.

How familiar does that sound to you?

When you move to Germany/Switzerland/Austria and start building a life here, you learn more than a new language.

You’re building a new version of yourself.

In your native language, your personality is already automatic.

You know how to tell stories.

How to make people laugh.

How to disagree politely.

How to flirt.

How to comfort someone.

How to sound intelligent.

How to be yourself.

All of that becomes much harder when you try saying it in German.

Your brain is using most of its energy just to operate the language.

Finding words.

Building sentences.

Remembering grammar.

Understanding what was just said.

Many learners mistakenly interpret this as:

“I’m shy.”

“I’m awkward.”

“I’m bad at languages.”

None of those things are normally true.

You’re simply operating with a fraction of your normal communicative ability.

And that’s frustrating!

Especially when you know exactly who you are in your own language.

However:

The German version of you already exists.

It’s just under construction.

And every conversation adds another brick.

Every misunderstanding.

Every successful interaction.

Every joke that lands.

Every opinion you manage to express.

Every moment where German feels slightly less foreign than it did before.

I believe that fluency is the moment you stop thinking about German...

...and start thinking about what you actually want to say.

The moment your personality becomes stronger than the language barrier.

The moment you sound like yourself again.

Maybe not exactly the same version.

But a version that can fully participate in life here.

Today’s topic is the Behördendschungel, literally the “bureaucracy jungle.” An expression used when forms, offices, appointments, rules, and paperwork become so complicated that nobody seems to know where the path leads anymore.

This must be one of the most frustrating topics when it comes to moving to Germany! (Switzerland and Austria don’t have the best reputation either)

Let’s see how to properly complain about that in real German…

Daniel: Doch. Die Frau hat mich angeschaut wie ein Alien und gesagt, dafür sei sie nicht zuständig. Ich solle online buchen. Nächster freier Termin ist in sechs Wochen!

Emma: Sechs Wochen für eine Ummeldung. Ich glaub's einfach nicht mehr ⍟. Ich warte seit zwei Monaten auf meinen neuen Aufenthaltstitel, und jedes Mal, wenn ich anruf, heißt es, der Vorgang läuft ⍟. Was heißt läuft? Wo läuft der hin?

Daniel: Ins Nichts wahrscheinlich. Das ist wie eine Blackbox. Du schickst Unterlagen rein, und dann hörst du monatelang nichts.

Daniel: Kenn ich. Bei mir war's fünfundvierzig Minuten, und dann hat eine Bandansage gesagt, das Amt ist jetzt geschlossen. Mitten am Nachmittag.

Emma: Und dann wundern die sich, warum alle genervt sind, wenn sie tatsächlich mal jemanden am Schalter erwischen.

Daniel: Into the void, probably. It's like a black box. You send in your documents, and then you hear nothing for months.

Emma: And god forbid you make a mistake yourself – a form filled in wrong, a box not ticked – the whole thing gets bounced straight back. But they can take weeks without anything happening at all.

Daniel: No consequences for them, only for us.

Emma: I tried calling someone last week. An hour on hold. An hour, Daniel. Then the line just went dead.

Daniel: I know that one. Mine was forty-five minutes, and then a recorded message said the office was now closed. In the middle of the afternoon.

Emma: And then they wonder why everyone's annoyed when they actually manage to get someone at the counter.

Daniel: I think it's deliberate. They make the system so complicated that half of people just give up and don't even bother asking.

Emma: Conspiracy theory, but I can't really argue with that right now.

Daniel: I need a coffee first. And then I'll book that appointment in six weeks.

Emma: Good luck with that. The website's probably going to crash anyway.

German is full of expressions that make perfect sense to native speakers and almost no sense to everyone else.

Take these:

Ich verstehe nur Bahnhof.
“I don’t understand anything.”
Literally: I only understand train station.

Das ist nicht mein Bier.
“That’s not my problem.”
Literally: That’s not my beer.

Da liegt der Hund begraben.
“That’s the real issue.”
Literally: That’s where the dog is buried.

If you translate these word by word, you might end up even more confused.

These expressions appear:

– at work
– in friendships
– in relationships
– on TV
– in newspapers
– and in everyday conversations all over Germany, Austria, and Switzerland

The funny thing is that many of them are actually quite entertaining once you know their meaning.

While lists like these are useful, expressions are rarely learned in isolation.

The best way to understand and remember them is to encounter them naturally in conversations, stories, and real-life situations.

Hallo zusammen!

Today’s topic is the Karrieremensch, literally a “career person.” Someone who is ambitious and often willing to invest a lot of time and energy into professional success.

In Germany, the word is usually neutral. Depending on who says it and in what context, it can sound like admiration… or a gentle warning.

In this dialogue, you’ll learn how people talk about ambition, work-life balance, success, and personal priorities…

Part 1 - Read 👀

Nora: Mein Bruder hat gerade eine Beförderung abgelehnt. Er hätte mehr Geld, und einen besseren Titel bekommen und er hat einfach nein gesagt. Meine Eltern drehen durch ⍟.

Jonas: Und er selbst?

Nora: Der ist völlig entspannt. Der sagt, er will nicht mehr Verantwortung, er will abends pünktlich nach Hause, er hat ein Leben außerhalb der Arbeit. Das klingt vernünftig, wenn ich's so sage – aber irgendwie versteh ich's auch nicht ganz.

Jonas: Warum nicht? Das ist doch eine klare Entscheidung.

Nora: Weil ich anders ticke ⍟, glaub ich. Ich will vorankommen ⍟. Nicht aus Geldgier, sondern weil mich das antreibt.

Jonas: Das ist legitim. Aber ich kenn auch genug Leute, die zehn Jahre lang alles der Karriere untergeordnet haben ⍟ – und dann mit Mitte vierzig merken, dass sie eigentlich gar nicht wissen, wer sie außerhalb des Jobs sind.

Nora: Das ist das Burnout-Klischee.

Jonas: Ja, aber Klischees entstehen nicht aus dem Nichts. Ich hab einen Kollegen, Abteilungsleiter, top Gehalt – der hat mir letztes Jahr gesagt, er kann sich an keinen einzigen Urlaub der letzten fünf Jahre wirklich erinnern. Der war immer gedanklich auf der Arbeit.

Nora: Okay, das ist traurig. Aber das ist ein Extrem. Man kann ehrgeizig sein, ohne sich selbst zu verlieren.

Jonas: Stimmt schon. Die Frage ist nur, wo die Grenze ist – und ob man's merkt, bevor man drüber ist.

Nora: Mein Bruder hat die Grenze halt früh gezogen. Vielleicht zu früh, vielleicht genau richtig. Ich weiß es nicht.

Jonas: Was sagt er denn, was ihm wichtig ist?

Nora: Zeit. Einfach Zeit. Für seine Freundin, für Sport, für Nichtstun. Er sagt, das ist sein Luxus ⍟.

Jonas: Das klingt eigentlich nicht dumm.

Nora: Nein. Klingt es nicht. Ich müsste nur lernen, das auch so zu sehen.

⍟ drehen durch – A very common informal expression used to describe someone who is losing their composure completely, whether from stress, anger, or disbelief, stronger than just being upset and widely used across all kinds of everyday situations. (English: “losing it” or “going mad” or “freaking out”, literal: “turning through”)

⍟ ich ticke anders – A casual spoken phrase used to explain that you simply think, feel, or function differently from someone else, without judgment on either side, common whenever someone acknowledges a genuine difference in mindset or values. (English: “I’m wired differently” or “I tick differently”, literal: “I tick differently”)

⍟ ich will vorankommen – A natural spoken phrase used to express personal ambition or the desire to progress in life or career, without specifying exactly how, common whenever someone describes what drives them as distinct from those who are content to stay put. (English: “I want to get ahead” or “I want to move forward”, literal: “I want to come forward”)

⍟ alles der Karriere untergeordnet haben – A spoken construction used to describe the act of making everything in life secondary to professional advancement, often said with a hint of retrospective sadness or criticism about a pattern that only becomes visible in hindsight. (English: “put everything second to their career” or “subordinated everything to work”, literal: “subordinated everything to the career”)

⍟ das ist sein Luxus – A simple but pointed spoken phrase used to reframe something ordinary or intangible as a genuine personal indulgence, implying that the speaker has consciously chosen it over more conventional markers of success. (English: “that’s his luxury” or “that’s what he considers a luxury”)

B) Translation 🔄

Nora: My brother just turned down a promotion. He would have got more money and a better title and he just said no. My parents are losing it.

Jonas: And him?

Nora: He's completely relaxed about it. He says he doesn't want more responsibility, he wants to be home on time in the evenings, he has a life outside of work. That sounds reasonable when I say it out loud – but somehow I don't quite get it either.

Jonas: Why not? It's a pretty clear decision.

Nora: Because I'm wired differently, I think. I want to get ahead. Not out of greed, but because that's what drives me.

Jonas: That's fair enough. But I also know plenty of people who spent ten years putting everything second to their career – and then at some point in their mid-forties they realise they don't actually know who they are outside of work.

Nora: That's the burnout cliché.

Jonas: Yeah, but clichés don't come from nowhere. I have a colleague, head of department, great salary – he told me last year that he can't genuinely remember a single holiday from the past five years. He was always mentally at work.

Nora: Okay, that's sad. But that's an extreme. You can be ambitious without losing yourself.

Jonas: Fair enough. The question is just where the line is – and whether you notice before you've already crossed it.

Nora: My brother drew the line early. Maybe too early, maybe exactly right. I don't know.

Jonas: What does he say matters to him?

Nora: Time. Just time. For his girlfriend, for sport, for doing nothing. He says that's his luxury.

Jonas: That's actually not stupid.

Nora: No. It's not. I'd just need to learn to see it that way too.

That probably sounds like terrible advice coming from a German teacher, I know 😄

But hear me out…

I’ve seen many students treating language learning as a project… like this:

Something they need to schedule.

Something they need to find time for.

Something they need to feel motivated to do.

The more effort it takes to get started, the less likely you’ll do it consistently.

This is actually one of the most robust findings in habit research: The easier a behavior is to start, the more likely it is to become a habit.

Yet many learners say that:

“On Saturday I’ll study for three hours.”

Saturday comes.

Life happens.

The study session disappears.

And then comes the guilt.

A better question is:

How can I make German so easy to start that I do it almost automatically?

Because habits are built through repetition. Intensity is not that important.

Small actions.
Repeated often.

It’s like brushing your teeth…. You don’t rely on motivation here, you don’t negotiate with yourself, you just do it!

The same principle applies to language learning.

Here are three habit-based changes that work well:

1. Lower the barrier

Don’t aim for an hour.

Aim for five minutes.

A habit that happens beats a perfect plan that doesn’t.

2. Attach German to something you already do

Coffee → German.

Lunch break → German.

Train ride → German.

Existing habits are powerful anchors for new habits.

3. Remove decision-making

The less you have to think about what to study, the more likely you’ll actually do it.

This is where many busy adults struggle.

They spend more time planning than practicing.

Which podcast?

Which grammar topic?

Which vocabulary list?

Which textbook?

The mental effort becomes the obstacle.
