In German, Vitamin B also means having the right connections: knowing someone who can get you a job, an apartment, etc.

The B stands for Beziehungen (“connections/relationships”). Just as vitamins are supposed to help your body, Vitamin B can give you a little boost in life through your personal network. It can range from harmless networking to outright favoritism, depending on the context.

Today’s topic is Currywurst, one of Germany’s most iconic fast foods and a small piece of German cultural history. Today’s dialogue explores its history.

Lars: Ja, Herta Heuwer. Sie hat sie 1949 in Charlottenburg erfunden. Sie hat an einem Imbissstand Ketchup und Currypulver gemischt – angeblich hatte sie die Zutaten von britischen Soldaten gegen Schnaps eingetauscht – und die Soße dann über die Wurst gekippt.

Mira: Ach echt, das war's? ⍟

Lars: Ja, genau. Und sie hat sich den Namen der Soße sogar als Marke schützen lassen. „Chillup" hat sie sie genannt. Den Markenschutz hatte sie wirklich – schwarz auf weiß ⍟.

Mira: Aber es wird auch behauptet, dass die Currywurst in Hamburg erfunden wurde.

Lars: Ja, das ist der ewige Streit ⍟. In Hamburg besteht man darauf, aber die meisten Historiker sagen, dass es Herta war. Es gibt sogar eine Gedenktafel dort, wo ihr Imbiss stand.

Mira: Ah, cool.

Mira: But there are also claims that the Currywurst was invented in Hamburg.

Lars: Yeah, that's the age-old argument. Hamburg insists on it, but most historians say it was Herta. There's even a commemorative plaque where her stall used to be.

Mira: Oh, cool.

Lars: Rightly so, I think. It's cultural history. Helmut Schmidt loved it by the way. He said he never would have become a good politician without Currywurst.

Mira: I don't believe you.

Lars: Okay, I made that bit up. But it sounds plausible, right?

Mira: Not really…

Today we are talking about Kaffeeklatsch, literally “coffee gossip.” Klatsch means gossip, so Kaffeeklatsch describes a chat over coffee, often with cake, where people talk about everyday life.

Hallo zusammen!

Literally, das Fettnäpfchen means “the little bowl of fat.” In the past, small containers of fat were kept around the house. For example, to grease leather boots. If you accidentally stepped into one, you had quite literally ins Fettnäpfchen getreten and made an unpleasant mess.

Today, Ins Fettnäpfchen treten means to put your foot in it: you say or do something inappropriate or embarrassing, usually without meaning to, and realize your mistake a few seconds too late…

Hallo zusammen!

Papperlapapp is an old-fashioned word meaning something like “nonsense!”, “rubbish!” or “oh, come on!” You use it when you think what someone has just said is not true or not worth taking seriously.

There isn’t really a literal translation. Papperlapapp is an onomatopoeic expression, so a string of sounds meant to imitate meaningless chatter. It has been used in German for centuries and is related to older expressions such as papp and pappern, associated with pointless or excessive talking.

So when someone tells you something you find completely ridiculous, sometimes there’s only one appropriate response: Ach, Papperlapapp!

Hallo zusammen!

Literally, Pantoffelheld means “slipper hero”: Pantoffel means “slipper” and Held means “hero.” The expression has been around for centuries and jokingly describes a man who may appear confident or powerful outside the home, but at home, his partner is clearly the boss. The Pantoffel represents the domestic sphere, while Held is used ironically. He might be a hero out in the world, but once the slippers are on, things look a little different.

Hallo zusammen!

This wonderfully German sounding word combines verschlimmern (”to make something worse”) and verbessern (”to improve”). So verschlimmbessern means trying to improve something and accidentally making it worse instead.

Schickimicki is a playful German word for people who seem overly concerned with appearances, luxury, designer brands, and / or status. No one knows its exact origin, but it likely developed as a rhyming expression in the 1960s and 70s, combining schick (”stylish” or “elegant”) with the nonsense ending -micki to make it sound a little silly and superficial.

Of course, dressing well doesn’t make someone schickimicki. The word is usually used when style starts to feel like showing off.

If you want to translate it literally, Affentheater means “monkey theatre.” It describes a situation where people behave in an exaggerated, childish, or chaotic way and make a huge fuss over something.

Literally, Glückspilz means “lucky mushroom.” It sounds strange at first, but the word goes back to the 19th century. Certain mushrooms were considered rare and valuable finds, so anyone who discovered them was seen as especially fortunate. Over time, Glückspilz became a playful way of describing someone who always seems to have luck on their side.

Mia: Ich hab gestern aus Versehen eine alte MSN-Playlist auf YouTube gefunden – so eine, die jemand hochgeladen hat mit den alten Klingeltönen und Statusmeldungen. Ich hab eine Stunde lang dagesessen und einfach nur geschaut.

Tobi: Ich versteh das komplett. Ich hab letzte Woche mein altes Nokia 3310 gefunden. Das Ding ⍟ hat noch Akku gehabt. Nach fünfzehn Jahren. Ich hab Snake gespielt bis Mitternacht und mich dabei so unglaublich geborgen ⍟ gefühlt.

Mia: Geborgen! Genau das ist das Wort. Ich weiß auch nicht, warum Pixelschlangen auf einem grauen Display so ein Gefühl von Sicherheit auslösen, aber es tut es einfach. Und weißt du was ich auch vermiss? Samstagnachmittag, TKKG im Radio.

Tobi: TKKG! I still have the cassettes. Somewhere in my parents' basement in a shoebox. And one day I'll open it and smell that old plastic – and I'm instantly eight years old again. Nostalgia through the sense of smell, that's the most intense version.

Mia: Absolutely. I get that with the smell of wax crayons.

Tobi: I used to wait for letters. Real letters, handwritten. I had a pen pal in France, Céline, in fifth grade. I wrote her letters on paper, with Tipp-Ex all over them because I kept making mistakes. It took so long – and was somehow so much more meaningful than firing off a WhatsApp in three seconds today.

Mia: We've completely lost the ability to wait for things. Back then, anticipation was a feeling that lasted weeks. These days I order something at eleven and by four I'm annoyed it's not here yet.

Tobi: I watched a film on DVD the other day, one I still had at home. I had to wait for it to load, had to sit through the ads, couldn't skip – and something about that was so pleasant. That enforced slowness. As if life had briefly pressed pause.

Mia: We're turning into those people who say "everything was better back then." I can feel it.

Literally, Löffelliste means “spoon list.” It comes from the German expression den Löffel abgeben (”to hand over the spoon”), an old idiom meaning to die, similar to the English expression to kick the bucket. A Löffelliste is therefore a list of things someone wants to do before they die.

In today’s dialogue, two friends compare the wildest items on their bucket lists.

Today’s topic, Beckenrandschwimmer, can be literally translated to “pool-edge swimmer”, so someone who stays at the edge of the swimming pool instead of getting too far into the water. In German, it’s a metaphor for someone who plays it safe, hesitates, overthinks decisions, or prefers watching from the sidelines instead of taking the first step.

Today’s dialogue is about one neighbour who hammers a nail into the wall on a Sunday morning, the other rings the doorbell because his Sunday is not as calm as he wishes it to be because of that.

In this dialogue, you’ll learn how German speakers talk about neighbours, noise, rules, and everyday conflicts, along with useful words, phrases, and natural ways of handling these situations in German.

Today’s dialogue was inspired by a conversation I had with one of my students about the Netflix series Dark. It’s one of the most popular German series among learners and, if you enjoy mysteries, definitely worth watching.

Part 1 - Read 👀

Nora: Okay, ich hab mal eine Frage. Wenn du in der Zeit reisen könntest, wohin würdest du gehen wollen?

Felix: In die Zukunft natürlich!

Nora: Wirklich? Ich würd in die Vergangenheit.

Felix: Natürlich würdest du das. Wohin?

Nora: Nach Berlin, in die 1920er. Da war Berlin noch Teil der Weimarer Republik, kurz bevor alles schief lief. Diese Energie, diese Kunstszene damals – Cabaret und Expressionismus. Das muss unglaublich ⍟ gewesen sein.

Felix: Und gleichzeitig gab's aber auch die Inflation, politische Gewalt und totale Instabilität. Du weißt, wie's ausgeht.

Nora: Ja, eben. Man weiß's, aber die Menschen damals wussten's nicht. Das find ich so faszinierend – dieses Mittendrin-Sein ⍟, ohne zu wissen, was kommt.

Felix: Das klingt für mich nach einem Albtraum, ehrlich gesagt. Ich will lieber wissen, was kommt.

Nora: Und? Wohin würdest du denn?

Felix: So hundert Jahre nach vorne. Also 2130 ungefähr. Ich will einfach wissen, ob wir's hingekriegt haben.

Nora: Hingekriegt – also Klimawandel und so? ⍟

Felix: Ja, genau. Schaut's gut aus oder nicht mehr? Leben wir noch auf der Erde oder schon irgendwo anders? Und wie sieht eine Stadt aus – Berlin zum Beispiel. Gibt's die noch so?

Nora: Das ist aber riskant. Was wenn du hinkommst und es ist… nicht schön?

Felix: Dann weiß ich's wenigstens. Unwissenheit find ich schlimmer als schlechte Nachrichten.

Nora: Ich glaub, ich wär da anderer Meinung. Manchmal ist nicht wissen ganz angenehm.

Felix: Typisch – du gehst lieber in die Vergangenheit, weil du weißt, was dich erwartet.

Nora: Na ja, so hab ich das noch nicht gesehen.

Felix: Und was würdest du in Berlin in den Zwanzigern machen? Einfach rumlaufen?

Nora: Ins Café setzen, Zeitung lesen, Leute beobachten. Vielleicht in irgendeine Galerie. Einfach fühlen, wie die Zeit tickt ⍟.

Felix: Das klingt sehr nach dir.

Nora: Und in dein Zukunfts-Berlin würd ich übrigens auch kurz reinschauen ⍟ wollen.

Felix: Nur kurz?

Nora: Ja. Und dann schnell wieder zurück in die Zwanziger.

A) Explanations 💬

⍟ unglaublich – One of the most common spoken intensifiers in everyday German, used to express that something is extraordinary, impressive, or hard to believe, functioning equally well as a standalone exclamation or as a modifier within a sentence across all registers. (English: “incredible” or “unbelievable” or “amazing”)

⍟ Mittendrin-Sein – A spoken nominalisation used to describe the experience of being right in the thick of something as it unfolds, without distance or hindsight, the “-Sein” suffix turning the adverb “mittendrin” into a noun that names the feeling itself. (English: “being right in the middle of it” or “being caught up in it”, literal: “the being-in-the-middle-of-it”)

⍟ und so? – A short, casual spoken tag used to gesture at a wider set of related things without listing them all, here used to confirm understanding of what has just been said, natural and economical in everyday conversation whenever the context makes the rest clear. (English: “and all that?” or “and that sort of thing?”, literal: “and so?”)

⍟ die Zeit tickt – A vivid spoken expression used to describe the feel or rhythm of a particular era or moment, more atmospheric than simply saying “how things were,” common when someone wants to convey immersion in a place or period rather than just facts about it. (English: “how time ticks” or “the pulse of the era”, literal: “time ticks”)

⍟ reinschauen – A casual spoken verb used to describe dropping in somewhere briefly or taking a quick look at something, without committing to a full visit or deep engagement, widely usable in everyday contexts involving a short, informal appearance. (English: “to pop in” or “to have a quick look”, literal: “to look in”)

B) Translation 🔄

Nora: Okay, I've got a question. If you could travel through time, where would you want to go?

Felix: The future, obviously!

Nora: Really? I'd go to the past.

Felix: Of course you would. Where?

Nora: Berlin in the 1920s. Back when Berlin was still part of the Weimar Republic, just before everything went wrong. That energy, that art scene – cabaret and expressionism. It must have been incredible.

Felix: And at the same time there was hyperinflation, political violence, and total instability. You know how it ends.

Nora: Exactly, that's the thing. We know, but the people back then didn't. That's what I find so fascinating – being right in the middle of it without knowing what comes next.

Felix: That sounds like a nightmare to me, honestly. I'd rather know what's coming.

Nora: And? Where would you go then?

Felix: About a hundred years forward. So around 2130. I just want to know whether we managed it.

Nora: Managed it – as in climate change and all that?

Felix: Yeah, exactly. Does it look okay or not anymore? Are we still living on Earth or somewhere else by then? And what does a city look like – Berlin, for example. Does it still exist the way it does now?

Nora: That's risky though. What if you get there and it's… not pretty?

Felix: Then at least I know. I find not knowing worse than bad news.

Nora: I think I'd feel differently about that. Sometimes not knowing is quite comfortable.

Felix: Typical – you'd rather go to the past because you know what to expect.

Nora: Well, I hadn't thought about it that way.

Felix: And what would you actually do in 1920s Berlin? Just wander around?

Nora: Sit in a café, read the newspaper, watch people. Maybe visit some gallery. Just feel how the era ticks.

Felix: That sounds exactly like you.

Nora: And I'd actually quite like to pop into your future Berlin for a moment too, by the way.

Felix: Just a moment?

Nora: Yes. And then straight back to the twenties.

Hallo zusammen!

When was the last time you were really unlucky?

German speakers call that Pech haben. Today, it simply means to have bad luck, but the word has an interesting origin. Pech originally meant pitch or tar, the sticky black substance used for waterproofing wood and ships for example. If you got Pech on your hands or clothes, it was incredibly difficult to get rid of. Over time, Pech haben became a metaphor for being stuck in an unfortunate situation or having a streak of bad luck.

In this dialogue, you’ll learn how German speakers talk about bad luck, frustrating days, and those moments when nothing seems to go your way...

Part 1 - Read 👀

Max: Ich sag dir, gestern war ich kurz davor, einfach wieder ins Bett zu gehen und den Tag zu streichen ⍟.

Lena: Was ist passiert?

Max: Wo soll ich anfangen ⍟. Morgens hab ich verschlafen, weil mein Handy nachts lautlos war – keine Ahnung wie und warum. Ich bin aufgestanden, hab Kaffee gemacht, und direkt die Kanne umgestoßen. Die komplette Tasse auf das neue Hemd.

Lena: Nein.

Max: Doch. Dann schnell umgezogen, raus zur Bahn – eine Minute zu spät. Ich hab sie noch gesehen, wie sie weggefahren ist. So eine Situation, wo die Türen zu gehen und du weißt, die warten nicht.

Lena: Das ist das Schlimmste.

Max: Genau. Nächste Bahn war zwanzig Minuten später. Ich steh im Regen, ohne Schirm, weil ich den natürlich auch nicht mal ⍟ eingepackt hab. Endlich im Büro, fragt der Kollege, ob ich das Meeting vergessen hab. Welches Meeting?

Lena: Oh Gott ⍟.

Max: Um neun, mit dem Kunden. Stand natürlich im Kalender. Ich hab's einfach nicht gesehen. Der Kunde war nicht mal unfreundlich, was irgendwie noch unangenehmer war.

Lena: Weil man sich dann nicht mal richtig beschweren kann.

Max: Genau. Mittagspause, Portemonnaie vergessen. Kollege hat mir was geliehen, und dann hab ich auf dem Weg zurück noch eine Vogelbekanntschaft gemacht.

Lena: Ein Vogel hat dich…

Max: Mitten auf ⍟ die Schulter. Frisch geputzte Jacke.

Lena: Das soll eigentlich Glück bringen.

Max: Ja, das hab ich auch gedacht. Und dann hab ich den Bus nach Hause verpasst...

⍟ zu streichen – A casual spoken expression used to describe writing something off entirely as a loss, here applied to a whole day, widely usable in any context where someone decides to cancel, abandon, or simply give up on something that has gone irretrievably wrong. (English: “to write off” or “to cancel”, literal: “to cross out”)

⍟ Wo soll ich anfangen – A very common spoken phrase used at the start of a story to signal that there is so much to tell that the speaker barely knows where to begin, often delivering the first hint that whatever follows will be a long list of disasters or complications. (English: “where do I even start” or “where do I begin”, literal: “where should I start”)

⍟ nicht mal – A compact and very frequent spoken intensifier used to emphasise that something did not even reach the minimum expected level, adding a layer of exasperation or disbelief to the statement it modifies, common across all kinds of everyday contexts. (English: “not even”)

⍟ Oh Gott – A universal spoken exclamation used to react to bad news, an awkward revelation, or anything mildly to moderately alarming, neither particularly religious nor dramatic in everyday use, just the natural spoken response when something lands badly. (English: “oh God” or “oh no”)

⍟ mitten auf – A spoken phrase used to pinpoint exactly where something hit, landed, or happened, with “mitten” emphasising the dead centre of the target and making the impact feel even more precise and therefore more comic or unfortunate. (English: “right on” or “smack in the middle of”, literal: “in the middle onto”)

B) Translation 🔄

Max: I'm telling you, yesterday I was this close to just going back to bed and writing the whole day off.

Lena: What happened?

Max: Where do I even start. In the morning I overslept because my phone had been on silent all night – no idea how or why. Got up, made coffee, and immediately knocked the pot over. The entire cup all over my new shirt.

Lena: No.

Max: Yes. Quickly got changed, rushed to the train – one minute too late. I could still see it pulling away. One of those situations where the doors are closing and you just know they're not waiting.

Lena: That's the worst.

Max: Exactly. Next train was twenty minutes later. I'm standing in the rain, no umbrella, because I hadn't even packed one. Finally get to the office and a colleague asks if I forgot about the meeting. What meeting?

Lena: Oh God.

Max: Nine o'clock, with the client. In the calendar, obviously. I just hadn't seen it. The client wasn't even unfriendly, which was somehow even more uncomfortable.

Lena: Because then you can't even properly complain about it.

Max: Exactly. Lunchbreak, forgot my wallet. A colleague lent me something, and then on the way back I had a close encounter with a bird.

Lena: A bird got you…

Max: Right on the shoulder. Freshly cleaned jacket.

Lena: That's supposed to bring good luck, actually.

Max: Yeah, I thought that too. And then I missed the bus home...
